October 13: Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

movie reviews

Okay, it’s Saturday night. We just watched Chucky add live ammo to the war game and that slug puppet puke into a woman’s mouth. We need to get serious.

Pop the DVD in. Turn off the lights. Get invested. We’re about to get scared.

Sally is moving in with her father for the first time. She’s anxious and a bit overwhelmed. Until she meets some friends in the house- friends who live in the basement and don’t like the light…

Tonight’s pick is Guillermo del Toro’s reimagining of a 1973 made-for-TV movie by the same name. He brings in that same magic realism he did so well in Pan’s Labyrinth, and the resulting story is faithful to the original but creepier. In director Troy Nixey’s capable hands, del Toro’s screenplay really has the potential for scaring the shit out of you. I hope it does.
